Reiki Love

Leona MacDougall has been a Reiki Master/ Teacher/ Practitioner since 2012. A big fan and endorser of holistic therapies (she’s been a recipient of so many), yet Reiki is still her favourite. She loves the calm, the grounding and the return to self she witnesses each time she works with the universal life force energy that is Reiki- (in her clients and in her, too). The seeming simplicity (Reiki can be offered in just about any setting and at a distance) and the fact that Reiki can be sent in all directions of time make the experience of Reiki accessible and powerful. It is hard to put into words what Reiki feels like as a client receives it (and it can be different every time) so Leona likes to focus upon how they will feel after. Peaceful, Light. Relaxed. Soft. At Peace. These are words from her clients (by the way).

Most Websites tell folks that Reiki is a Japanese form of alternative energy healing. Because it is! But I want to tell you where it came from. I want to tell you about the man responsible for the body of knowledge that is “Reiki”?

This incredible blessing of healing light taught me ‘what intentionally directed light can do’.

The man who developed Reiki as a system of hands-on healing was named Mikao Usui. He was born in Gifu, Japan, on August 15, 1865. He came from a Samurai family, who at that time were considered the traditional ruling class. He was a spiritual seeker who, at a crossroads in his life, joined a Zen Buddhist monastery. He remained there for three years but did not find the universal connection he was searching for.

Usui left the monastery and went into complete isolation for 21 days on Mount Kurama, a mountain in Japan known for its sacred energy. As he was leaving the mountain on the last day of his retreat, he tripped on a thick tangle of roots that blanketed the ground. He fell, hurting his foot. But instead of being injured, something very miraculous happened. It was a type of spiritual experience that’s best described as being struck by lightning (without being electrocuted). The Japanese call this ethereal and transformative experience Satori — a moment of sudden understanding. Usui had lost a toenail from his fall. Instinctively, he wrapped his hands around his toe and held it. To his utter amazement, it started to heal. Right after he was able to walk normally, free of agony, down the mountain.

Reaching the bottom, he stopped for refreshment at a nearby inn. There he learned that the innkeeper’s daughter had a tooth infection. Gaining her father’s permission, he placed his hands on the girl’s face. She immediately felt the swelling go down, and the pain began to subside.

Usui began sharing his healing gifts with others. Word of these mysterious healings spread quickly in his community and beyond so that he became extremely busy. But Usui did not want to be the only hands-on healer, or a miracle worker, so he made a smart and brave decision to develop a system of healing. This would allow him to transfer his hands-on healing power to other people so they, too, could pass this healing on. He was aware that the need was too great for only one person to possess it. In sharing this with the public, Mikao Usui bravely broke with Japanese tradition. His words below convey — that in his culture, at that time in his life — this was a very big deal.

From ancient times, whenever someone develops a secret method, that one would teach it to the people among the family, as a legacy for the later generations of the family living. That idea, not to teach the public and keep that sacred method in the family, is really the past century’s bad custom.

—Mikao Usui (Extract from Reiki — Heal Your Body and Your Life with the Power of Universal Energy, by Torsten A. Lange)

Mikao Usui passed away at the age of 60, but during his short life he developed a teachable system of hands-on healing for the everyday person. He trained others, who then trained others (who are still training others). So here we are, 160 years later. Reiki has changed my life. I know that the art of blessing found its way into my heart as smoothly as it did because Mikao Usui’s legacy of healing taught me what light can do.

I can feel universal life force energy flow into my Crown Chakra, throughout my body and out into my hands. And I can pass it on to others (how cool is that?). My experiences with light — through Reiki — have shown me what intentionally directed light can do.

This Reiki story is my favourite way of addressing the importance of challenging cultural customs and hierarchical beliefs that withhold universal light from humanity.

Never underestimate the power of self indulgence (or society’s perception of self indulgence) where sacred self care practices are concerned.
